Dynamic Touch Team Member, Kathy Flippin, recently volunteered her massage therapy expertise at the Pan American Games. Kathy worked as an official massage therapist for athletes on Team U.S.A. While her main focus was on the swim team, Kathy did massages for rugby, track and field, gymnastics, fencing athletes and more.
A typical day at the games involved anywhere from 10 to 30 massages in a day! Of those massages some were for pain management, some were pre-race invigorating massages, and some were post-race flush massages to help manage the lactic acid buildup. Use of massage for recovery at an event of this caliber is becoming more and more in demand.
Kathy describes how the Games were a great learning experience for her. She was able to watch and learn from other practitioners in the medical clinic and they were happy to show her some new techniques. The event was both inspiring and enriching for Kathy, she says that working at events like the Pan American Games “makes me a better person and a better therapist”. Maybe next year she will have the honor to provide massage at the London Olympics… Stay Tuned, and GO USA!!
Everyone who exercises has a few reasons for doing it, but usually there’s one that stands out the most. I was a Massage Therapist before I was a triathlete. I didn’t even think of doing a Triathlon until I did post-race massages at the Pacific Coast Triathlon in Newport Beach in 2001. I got so inspired seeing the age-group women come across the finish line that I said to myself “Wow Kathy, maybe you could do that”! So, I started swimming biking and running, and here I am 10 years later. Whether it’s a 5k or a Century Bike ride, I love feeling the progression day to day, and the cyclical routine of the peak and taper.
Each of our therapists brings their own style and experience into the massage room. Denise is a true out-doorsy gal! She loves activities that she can do with other people like Hiking. She also did the Pacific Coast Triathlon this year, and 10 years ago! She also kayaks, and does SUP… you name it, she’s tried it! Katcha has had years on the soccer field, and does pilates regularly. She’s very inspired in a team atmosphere. Patty loves lifting at the gym because she can go on her own schedule, and it keeps her fit, but her favorite thing to do is hike the bluffs with her sweet yellow lab.
You have your own sport, too. And your own reasons for doing it. Whatever it is you’re doing, if you need care you know you’re in good hands with a group of massage therapists who has vast experience from their own healthy lifestyles as well as years of professional experience of working with athletes of many sports in various settings.

You may already know that our office provides Oncology Massage. Oncology Massage is intended for those who want to receive massage during or after cancer treatment. Did you know that A “deep tissue” massage is NOT appropriate during treatment, or for anyone who has had any lymph nodes removed, no matter how long ago? Cancer patients and survivors require special Massage considerations to keep them safe such as avoiding interference with treatment, and avoiding any risk of inducing lymphedema (mild to severe swelling of an entire arm or leg).
Our trained Oncology Massage Therapists are able to adapt a Massage session to Calm, Nurture and Relax anyone during any stage of their cancer treatment or recovery.
A few months ago, Katcha and Kathy both completed a second, much-needed Continuing Education course offered by Greet the Day called Gentle Scar Tissue Release, which helps relieve shoulder limitations and chest-muscle tightness after mastectomy surgery. With so many women undergoing this surgery, there is a great demand for this very specialized technique. The sessions are not painful, and are very brief, making treatment more affordable. Please help us spread the word on this great new addition to our practice!
Kathy and Katcha have recently attended continuing education in Active Release Techniques. ART is a significant addition to the therapeutic menu. ART is a very sophisticated massage technique that requires client participation and movement while the therapist is working. It isolates each specific muscle in a way that can release adhesions and nerve entrapments. We are offering these techniques as an add-on to a regular Massage Session, or on its own as a separate menu item.
ART has a very good reputation, especially with Ironman triathletes. Every Ironman competition has a group of ART volunteers working on the athletes before and after the race. It is the ideal addition to a Sports Massage Session.
We’re always growing to offer you higher and higher levels of service. Schedule your massage today, and request the ART add-on for extra therapeutic benefit.

Gillian Levy has been one of our treasured therapists at Dynamic Touch for over two years. She brings a strong background, and a warm heart to her massage clients. She has decided to shift gears and move into the nursing field. That means she will be studying instead of doing massages, and will no longer be part of the Dynamic Touch Massage Team. She is also the anchor at the Satellite Location in Lake Forest, and so that location is now closed.
Gillian has enjoyed working with many wonderful DT clients, and hopes to remain in contact. She’s not sure what her future schedule will be, so stay tuned, we’ll announce if she becomes available again. If you have questions or want to send her good luck messages, her email is GillianLevy@DynamicTouchMassage.com .
How does a goof-around athlete qualify for the Olympics? By being an excellent Sports Massage Therapist!
Kathy has been working with swimmers since 1999, when one Orange County Swimmer decided to use her for weekly sports massage while he was training for Sydney in 2000. Through him, she got involved with USA Swimming the opportunities started rolling in. She’s been to Shanghai for World Championships, and done massage at the Duel in the Pool meet, where the US goes head-to-head against Australia. And Three Times attended Olympic Trials.
This year, the US National Swim Meet, and Pan Pacific Games are both coming to California! Not just anywhere in California, but Irvine! Kathy has been invited to volunteer as National Team Massage Therapist for both meets, which are between August 3 and August 23. Swimmers know, Massage helps with Recovery, which keeps them strong throughout their intense training and week-long events.
Kathy is well-matched by another therapist at Dynamic Touch. Katcha Minot, whose resume is just as long as Kathy’s, is on her way at the end of August to the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center. It’s run very much like a college campus for athletes in training. They have dorms, and training facilities for many different sports. Katcha will be working in the Athletic Training Center doing massage for athletes that reside there, and are visiting for training camps. It’s a very exciting atmosphere, and a huge privilege.
Congrats to them both for their contributions to the US athletes! Hopefully the next step will be to provide massage for the Olympic Athletes at the London 2012 games!!
