Massage for Survivors- Gentle Scar Tissue Release after Mastectomy
Did you know that A “deep tissue” massage is NOT appropriate during Breast Cancer treatment, or for anyone who has had ANY lymph nodes removed, no matter how long ago? Deep Tissue Massage can cause Lymphedema for someone who has had lymph nodes removed. Lymphedema is the mild to sever swelling of an entire arm or leg (usually the arm on the same side as the breast that was treated for cancer). It is caused by fluid backup in the limb affected by lymph node removal- even a sentinal node biopsy. Deep massage should never be done on the affected limb. Strenuous workouts can also be a trigger for lymphedema. Cancer patients and survivors require special Massage and Exercise considerations to keep them safe in order to avoid any risk of inducing lymphedema.
There is so much more to you than the site of your surgery. You are a Whole Person and our trained Oncology Massage Therapists are able to adapt a Massage session to Calm, Nurture and Relax you during any stage of cancer treatment or recovery. You won’t have to worry about the pressure being too aggressive, and we can adjust positions to side-lying if it’s uncomfortable to lay face down. We also avoid working on areas around tumors and radiation burns. However, the rest of your body can really benefit from the soothing effects of massage to relieve your muscle tension and ease your mind. Katcha, Kathy and also Patty have each completed the Greet the Day Oncology Massage basic protocol to learn these specialized techniques.
In 2011, Katcha and Kathy both completed a groundbreaking Continuing Education course offered by Greet the Day called Gentle Scar Tissue Release, which helps relieve shoulder limitations and chest-muscle tightness after mastectomy surgery. With so many women undergoing this surgery, there is a great demand for this very specialized technique. The sessions are not painful, and are very brief, making treatment more affordable. Please help us spread the word on this great new addition to our practice!
